The Department of Education and Skills and Healthy Ireland encourage ALL schools to organise an Active School Week (ASW) as part of their annual school calendar.
The ASW initiative is about providing FUN and INCLUSIVE physical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. It allows schools to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it also very enjoyable. It provides schools with an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the physical activity opportunities that are available in their locality and to work collaboratively with students, parents and members of the community.
We are looking forward to taking part in this week and have lots of activities organised for the week mentioned. The children already do busy breaks with various activities, exercises in the class and have done various sports and activities throughout the year and continue to do so.
This year we are really excited about joining up with our local GAA club to bring this interactive workshop also. It’s all about getting active and making good choices. We are delighted to have county and club players John Meagher ( senior county hurler) and Liam Treacy ( senior county footballer) to talk about their experiences and also do some fun activities with us. We are also lucky to host Anna Mcelhinney, a nutritionist, to speak about various foods, making sure “healthy foods” are really healthy, sugar content, recipes for food, food tastings etc. This will be an excellent thought provoking and educational presentation and not to be missed.
