The aim of the Slow Down initiative is to remind all drivers of the dangers of speeding, to comply with speed limits and to deter driving at excessive speeds.
National Slow Down Day on October 21st will consist of high visibility speed enforcement activities as well as a major public awareness drive involving national, local and social media.
It is being run in conjunction with the RSA and other partner stakeholders.
The new Slow Down Day comes on foot of a marked increase in road deaths in 2016. Inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor in road traffic collisions, further confirmed by a recent RSA report on fatal collisions which identified excessive speed as a contributory factor in one third of all fatal collisions between 2008 and 2012.
